The days from 21 to 25 September were rainless. Various divisions were relieved and in a brisk little action on Sunday 23 September 12th KRRC and 10th Rifle Brigade went into Eagle Trench from both ends and bombed the Germans out. German attacks on Sunday and Tuesday were repulsed.

On 24 September Major General Sir John Monash wrote home:

‘You will have heard by now that the campaign for the Passchendaele Ridge (which I foreshadowed in a recent letter) started on the 20th. First ANZAC (which has again resumed the 4th Division) is having the first go, and we (2nd ANZAC) shall come in later. First and 2nd Divisions did the first ‘push’ most brilliantly; day after tomorrow 4th and 5th Divisions will come through them and do a second push; and early in October, self and Russell (NZ) expect to capture the Gravenstafel Spur, and later get on to the Passchendaele Ridge proper.... The fighting done in this ‘push’ by the Australians has been most brilliant in every way....
